Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for well over a thousand years, from around the fourth century BC, and what survives is not a single monument but a city-sized field of them: brick stupas the size of small hills, monastery foundations, bathing tanks, guardstones and the reservoirs that fed all of it. It sits about 200 kilometres north of Colombo, which is why most people either rush it or skip it entirely.
This trip takes it on directly. You leave Colombo early on the expressway and northern highway, and your driver-guide uses the drive to set out who built what and why — the shift from the wet south-west to the dry zone is visible through the window as paddy and coconut give way to scrub, tanks and the occasional wild elephant warning sign.
Mihintale is where the story starts. It was on this hill in the third century BC that the monk Mahinda is said to have met King Devanampiya Tissa and introduced Buddhism to the island. A long granite stairway climbs past monastic remains to a summit dagoba with the plain below. The climb is steady rather than steep, but there are a lot of steps.
In Anuradhapura proper you take in the great stupas — Ruwanwelisaya in its white-plastered bulk, the older brick mass of Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri — alongside the moonstones and guardstones of the monastic quarters. The Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is still an active pilgrimage site and one of the oldest documented planted trees anywhere.
Be realistic about the day. The round trip from Colombo is long, and you will be on the road for a large part of it. Come with an early alarm, comfortable shoes and something to cover shoulders and knees, because every site here is a working religious place.
